Yemeni Prime Minister discusses Houthi escalation repercussions and humanitarian situation with UN official

Aden, Oct 4 (KUNA) -- Yemeni Prime Minister Dr. Shaeib al-Zandani stressed on Sunday that the rapid developments in Yemen, the increasing waves of displacement, and growing humanitarian needs place the international community and the United Nations under a doubled responsibility to take urgent action and strengthen the humanitarian response.

The Yemeni state news agency reported that these remarks were made during al-Zandani’s meeting in the temporary capital of Aden with John Ging, Special Adviser to the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. The two sides discussed the latest developments in the humanitarian situation, the repercussions of the current escalation, priorities for relief intervention, and ways to enhance partnership and coordination between the government and the United Nations.

Al-Zandani emphasized the importance of shifting from a needs-based immediate response to a more effective and sustainable approach that ensures adequate funding, accelerates the delivery of supplies, and strengthens health, nutrition, protection, and shelter sectors. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the necessary facilitations for the work of the United Nations and humanitarian organizations, and to creating suitable conditions for them to carry out their mandates.

He stated that the government is working in coordination with the Presidential Leadership Council and the armed forces leadership to address the developments of the current phase with national responsibility, aiming to preserve national front cohesion and pave the way for the restoration of the capital, Sanaa, and to end the suffering of the Yemeni people.

For his part, Ging outlined the United Nations’ efforts to coordinate the humanitarian response in Yemen and the priorities for intervention amid rising needs and displacement waves. He affirmed the continued support of the UN for Yemen, enhanced coordination with the government and humanitarian agencies, and efforts to mobilize additional international funding and contributions to address emergency needs.

He praised the cooperation provided by the Yemeni government and the facilitations it offers to the work of UN organizations, expressing his appreciation for their efforts under these exceptional circumstances. (End) S.N.S. / F.A.S.
