Russia announces targeting of four cargo ships and military sites in Ukraine

Moscow, Oct 4 (KUNA) -- The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that it had targeted four dry cargo ships in the port of Chornomorsk, the waters of the Bug River estuary, and the Black Sea, stating they were being used to transport supplies and military equipment to Ukrainian forces. The ministry added in a statement that its forces also struck the Northern Bridge in the capital, Kyiv, and warned of intensified strikes on military facilities, defense industries, and related infrastructure in Ukraine.

According to a statement carried by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Geran-2 loitering munitions carried out the attacks on the four ships, noting that two of them were transporting military equipment to the port of Odesa in the northwestern Black Sea. The statement added that the Northern Bridge in Kyiv, which spans the Dnipro River, was targeted because it was being used to transport troops and military supplies.

The ministry said the intensive Russian strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian areas came in response to what it described as actions by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing his remarks about his country’s intention to intensify strikes on Russian oil refineries. Moscow accused Kyiv of attempting to carry out large-scale drone attacks on civilian facilities in the Russian capital on September 19 and 20, stating that more than 1,600 attack drones were involved in those strikes, without providing independent details on targets and damage.

The ministry also accused Ukrainian authorities of trying to disrupt the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg last June, and said Kyiv launched a nighttime drone attack on residential neighborhoods in the city of Belgorod, resulting in casualties. It affirmed that strikes on military facilities, the military-industrial complex, and related infrastructure in Ukraine would intensify, placing responsibility for this on the Ukrainian leadership, according to the statement.

These developments come as Moscow and Kyiv exchange intensive attacks targeting infrastructure, military facilities, and energy installations. Ukraine has recently intensified its long-range strikes on oil facilities within Russian territory, while Russia continues to target Ukrainian ports and critical infrastructure, increasingly focusing on disrupting supply lines and energy and transport infrastructure on both sides.
