Kuwait City, 4 October (KUNA) -- The Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) held its 33rd Coordination Meeting of Environment and Climate Change Experts from member states, both in person and via video conferencing, at the permanent headquarters of Arab organizations in Kuwait.

In a press release, OAPEC stated that the meeting aligns with the organization’s commitment to monitoring environmental issues and climate change and their impacts on the energy sector and sustainable development in Arab countries. It emphasized that the meeting aims to strengthen coordination and cooperation among member states in international climate forums, exchange expertise, and build common Arab positions on environmental issues of shared concern.

OAPEC added that its Secretary-General, Engineer Khaled Al-Otaibi, opened the session, which seeks to follow up on the latest developments in negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, enhance Arab coordination, and exchange perspectives on issues on the international climate action agenda in preparation for the 31st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP31).

The meeting discussed developments in the implementation of the Framework Convention, as well as the positions of countries and negotiating groups on various related issues. It also reviewed potential scenarios for the trajectory of climate negotiations in the coming period, aiming to support Arab positions and enhance the effectiveness of their participation in international climate forums.

It was noted that the Turkish city of Antalya will host COP31 from 9 to 20 November, with broad international participation to explore ways to implement climate targets, promote innovation and partnerships, and support practical solutions to address climate change challenges.

Representatives of member states participated in the meeting, alongside representatives from the Secretariat-General of the League of Arab States, the Secretariat-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and the head of the Arab negotiating team from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
