Kuwait City, Oct 3 (KUNA) -- October 3:

1961 - Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, issued Decree No. 16 of 1961 appointing Sheikh Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah as the first head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to his position as head of the General Health Department.

1976 - Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, issued Law-Decree No. 68 of 1976 approving the agreement establishing the Gulf News Agency, which was tasked with collecting news, investigations, and photographs from the Arabian Gulf region and abroad from its headquarters in Bahrain, and distributing them to institutions and individuals. Its name was later changed in September 2001 to Bahrain News Agency.

1977 - A hijacked Japanese plane landed at Kuwait International Airport for refueling, then departed for Damascus after seven hostages were released.

1986 - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah inaugurated the new building of Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

1998 - The Kuwait Stock Exchange began futures trading, becoming the first stock exchange in the Middle East to adopt such transactions.

2005 - The permanent headquarters of the Supreme Advisory Committee for Completing the Implementation of Islamic Sharia Law provisions, established in 1991 under the Amir’s Diwan, was opened.

2010 - The Kuwaiti national football team won the sixth West Asian Championship after defeating their Iranian counterpart 2-1 in a match held in Jordan.

2013 - Kuwait Petroleum International opened the first unmanned gas station on a highway in Eemnes, Netherlands.

2018 - The Kuwait Stock Exchange obtained full membership in the World Federation of Exchanges during the 58th General Assembly of the World Federation of Exchanges held in Athens, Greece.

2019 - Kuwait won a seat on the Arab Human Rights Committee (Charter Committee) of the Arab League.

2021 - Public and private schools welcomed students in person for the new academic year after an interruption of approximately 18 months due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), amid preventive measures.

2021 - The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a grant agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) worth $1.9 million to support the project for developing health services for Syrian refugees in Jordan.

2022 - Kuwait University announced that Professor Badr Al-Anzi, an environmental technology expert, had registered a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office regarding “water improvement and solving environmental pollution problems scientifically,” which contributes to improving the quality of the Kuwaiti environment.
