Egyptian Foreign Minister confirms rejection of unilateral actions on the Nile River
Cairo, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty stressed on Friday the necessity of adhering to the rules of international law and rejecting unilateral measures in the Nile River basin. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that this position was expressed during a meeting between Minister Abdelatty and Masud Boswell, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs, held on the sidelines of the Alamein Africa Forum.
The statement clarified that the meeting addressed several regional files in the Horn of Africa region, where Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of de-escalation, prioritizing political solutions, and supporting national state institutions. He warned against the dangers of escalation that could destabilize security and stability in the region and the Red Sea.
According to the statement, the meeting also touched upon the situation in Libya and ways to achieve progress in the political process and end the division plaguing the country. Abdelatty reaffirmed the priority of preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, alongside supporting the cohesion of its national institutions. He underscored the importance of integrating regional and international efforts supporting the Libyan political track, to help Libyan parties reach a sustainable settlement that reflects their will and preserves the unity of the state and its institutions.
The statement said the two sides also discussed developments in Sudan, with Minister Abdelatty stressing the need to preserve Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as safeguard its national institutions and the resources of its people. He emphasized the importance of building on current efforts aimed at ending the conflict and creating an environment conducive to finding political solutions through dialogue and negotiation.
He added that the meeting reflected a shared appreciation for the depth of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, with Abdelatty affirming the commitment to continue enhancing bilateral relations across various political, economic, and investment dimensions to serve the mutual interests of both sides.
The U.S. official, according to the statement, expressed appreciation for Egypt’s role in Africa, noting that Egypt’s hosting of these important African events in Alamein reflects growing engagement that contributes to strengthening African cooperation, which requires a significant boost in its economic and investment dimensions.
