African Union Office in Libya Reopens After 11-Year Closure

Tunis, Oct 1 (KUNA) -- The Libyan Government of National Unity announced on Thursday the reopening of the African Union office in the capital, Tripoli, after it had been closed for approximately 11 years.
The Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that this development came during a visit by African Union Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to Tripoli, where he met with Taher al-Baier, the acting Libyan Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The statement noted that both sides inaugurated the premises designated for the African Union in Tripoli, which aligns with the Government of National Unity’s commitment to strengthening Libya’s relations with the African Union and enhancing its presence in the continental neighborhood. This move aims to provide an institutional framework that facilitates direct communication with the African Union Commission, supports the follow-up of issues of mutual interest, and coordinates related programs and initiatives.
The statement emphasized that the opening of the office represents a supportive step toward enhancing Libya’s engagement in African affairs and facilitating cooperation between Libyan entities and African Union institutions. This, in turn, will open broader horizons for participation in continental programs and initiatives and strengthen Libya’s role within the African space.
According to the statement, this development is part of Libya’s preparations to host the Fourth Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit in December next year.
The signing ceremony for the agreement on the reopening of the African Union office and the resumption of its activities took place on February 13, 2025, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, between the Government of National Unity and the African Union. (End) S.B.M. / M.M.J.
