Signing of the Ministerial 'Algeria Declaration' on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor Project

Algiers, Jan 10 (KUNA) -- Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany signed the Ministerial Declaration on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project today, Thursday. The signing ceremony was attended by Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mourad Medelci; Austria’s Minister of Economy and Energy, Wolfgang Hatzenbichler; Italy’s Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin; Germany’s State Secretary for Economy and Energy, Frank Werfel; and Tunisia’s Acting Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Salah Zouari.
In a statement, Algeria’s Ministry of Energy said the declaration underscores the strategic importance of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor as a driver of regional integration and energy cooperation, while reaffirming the shared commitment to strengthening regional and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in green hydrogen.
The statement noted that the declaration provides for the establishment of a dedicated secretariat to provide technical support for the project, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). It added that the declaration highlights the importance of political support to ensure the continued development and success of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor by establishing regular dialogue among partner countries.
The statement clarified that the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project aims to transport four million tons of green hydrogen annually from Algeria to three European countries via a 3,000-kilometer pipeline, representing 10 percent of the expected European demand for this clean fuel by 2040.
Work on the project began in October 2024, when a memorandum of understanding was signed to conduct necessary studies to assess the feasibility of producing and exporting green hydrogen from Algeria to Europe. (End) M.R. / S.A.M.
