Germany: Reduction in support for Ukraine would have dangerous repercussions on European security

Berlin, Jan 1 (KUNA) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned on Thursday that a decline in support for Ukraine in its war against Russia would have dangerous repercussions for European security. Speaking at the ceremony awarding the Westphalian Peace Prize to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the city of Münster, Merz stated that “undermining Germany’s and Europe’s position means undermining security in Ukraine as well.” He noted that the absence of German support for Kyiv could lead to the war ending in what he described as a “forced peace” for Ukraine, while cautioning that the consequences could include a surge in mass migration toward the West and destabilization of the Ukrainian state. In this context, Merz affirmed that Berlin would not back down from supporting Ukraine, despite the escalation of what he termed hybrid attacks, citing a drone attack attempt on Leipzig Airport in early August. Germany is currently Ukraine’s largest financial and military backer, but its substantial aid faces growing opposition within the country. (End) E.N.J. / M.A.A.
