Germany announces creation of new drone regiment in the army
Berlin, Jan 10 (KUNA) -- German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Thursday that the Bundeswehr will begin establishing a specialized drone regiment in 2027 as part of plans to accelerate the development and deployment of this type of weaponry. Pistorius, speaking during a visit to a military camp in Bergen, Lower Saxony, said the regiment will comprise up to 600 personnel and will operate systems with a range of up to 500 kilometers, including unmanned aerial vehicles. The minister confirmed that the regiment will also include a specialized unit for electronic warfare, noting that the aim is to consolidate capabilities and speed up the development of drone systems. According to available information, the regiment will be part of the 10th Armored Division, which includes the 45th Armored Brigade deployed in Lithuania as part of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) missions. The German Army is seeking to increase its use of drones, drawing lessons from the war in Ukraine. (End) A.N.J./M.A.A.
