Algerian Energy Minister: Algeria-Europe Hydrogen Alliance Aims to Harness Renewable Energy
Algiers, Jan 10 (KUNA) -- Algerian Energy Minister Mourad Ould Abdallah said on Thursday that the objective of the Algeria-Europe Hydrogen Alliance is to harness the country’s renewable energy resources. He explained that the South H2 Hydrogen Corridor project is dedicated to infrastructure and cross-border pipelines for transporting and supplying hydrogen to the European market.
Speaking at the opening of the second ministerial meeting of the project’s partner countries—Algeria, Austria, Germany, Italy, and Tunisia—Ould Abdallah stated that the initial results of the project’s feasibility study would be released in 2027. He clarified that the feasibility study focuses specifically on identifying and analyzing potential sites for renewable hydrogen production in Algeria, determining the project’s cost, examining various transportation options, and assessing market opportunities in Europe.
He highlighted the intensive efforts undertaken by Algeria and its partners “to develop the hydrogen sector, particularly through the Algeria-Europe Hydrogen Alliance.”
Earlier today, the partner countries of the South H2 project held a ministerial meeting to discuss giving the project a “strong boost.” The initiative aims to transport 4 million tons of green hydrogen to Europe via a 3,000-kilometer pipeline, representing 10 percent of Europe’s projected demand for this clean fuel by 2040.
Work on the project began in October 2024, when a memorandum of understanding was signed to carry out the necessary studies to assess the feasibility of producing green hydrogen in Algeria and exporting it to Europe. (End) M.R./F.S.
