Madrid, September 30 (KUNA) -- Kuwait, represented by a delegation from the Kuwait Winter Sports Club, is participating in the 2026 Annual Congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) General Assembly, which kicked off today, Wednesday, on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

Mishal Al-Ajmi, head of the Kuwaiti delegation and Development Director at the club, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) in a telephone call that the three-day meeting, attended by representatives of national member federations from around the world, is taking place on the Mediterranean island.

Al-Ajmi added that the Congress is a significant event for the IIHF, as it includes several crucial topics, most notably the elections for the positions of President, Vice Presidents, and Board Members for the next four-year term. He clarified that the Congress will also discuss strategies for developing the sport, adopting regulations, and coordinating upcoming World Championships for men and women across various levels and age categories. He praised the excellent organization of the conference by both the Spanish and international federations.

Al-Ajmi noted that candidates for the presidency and other positions will present their election platforms to the IIHF General Assembly members during the meeting, ahead of the voting process scheduled for the final day of the conference next Friday. He pointed out that Kuwait holds two votes in the federation, the highest possible number, having fulfilled all IIHF requirements.

He emphasized that Kuwait’s participation in the meeting aims to strengthen its distinguished presence in the global ice hockey ecosystem, expressing hope that the conference will yield decisions that promote the development of this fastest team sport, particularly in emerging countries.

Al-Ajmi indicated that the Kuwaiti delegation, which also includes Rashid Al-Filakawi, a member of the club’s Development Board, will hold a number of sessions alongside participating delegations and sport officials on the sidelines of the meeting to consolidate sports relations, thereby contributing to the advancement of the sport and supporting Kuwaiti athletes who practice it.

He mentioned that the Kuwaiti delegation will invite key leaders of the sport worldwide to attend the Level 4 World Championship competitions, which the country will host next March, and to witness the significant progress achieved by Kuwaiti ice hockey.

Al-Ajmi highlighted the efforts of the Kuwait Winter Sports Club’s Board of Directors in supporting all five winter sports under its supervision, including ice hockey. (End) H.N.D. / M.A.A.
