Egypt reaffirms support for UN efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Libya

Cairo, Sept 30 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Badr Abdel Ati reaffirmed today, Wednesday, his country’s support for United Nations efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive Libyan-led political settlement. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that this position was expressed during a meeting between Abdel Ati and the UN Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Tita, to discuss the latest developments in Libya’s political and security situation and the efforts underway to advance the political process within the framework of the UN-brokered roadmap. According to the statement, Abdel Ati stressed the necessity of maintaining Libyan ownership and leadership of the political process, and emphasized the importance of moving forward to hold presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently, concluding transitional phases, and unifying Libyan state institutions in a manner that respects Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Abdel Ati also listened to a briefing from the UN Special Representative on developments in the implementation of the roadmap and the steps being taken to address outstanding issues within the constitutional and legal framework governing elections.
