Algerian President reaffirms readiness to support elections in South Sudan

Algiers, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed on Tuesday his country's readiness to provide the necessary logistical and technical support to accompany the authorities and electoral bodies in South Sudan, calling on all parties that signed the peace agreement to "engage actively and positively in a comprehensive and constructive political dialogue."

The Algerian Prime Minister's office stated in a press release that "Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane participated today, representing President Tebboune, in a video conference with the heads of state and government of the African Union's High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan, convened by the committee's chair, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa."

During the address delivered by Benabderrahmane on his behalf, President Tebboune "reaffirmed Algeria's full solidarity with the Republic of South Sudan and its steadfast support for the process of enhancing peace, stability, and institution-building in this brotherly country." He emphasized that "the current phase represents a pivotal moment in South Sudan's history, as the upcoming electoral milestone constitutes a decisive step in building institutional frameworks and consolidating political stability."

The Algerian president also drew attention to "existing challenges that could hinder the completion of this path," urging all parties to "demonstrate a sense of responsibility and resort to dialogue and consensus."

It is worth noting that this meeting is held within the framework of the African Union's ongoing efforts to renew its support for initiatives aimed at enhancing security and stability in South Sudan, to follow up on the latest developments regarding the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, and to explore ways to complete the transitional phase through the organization of free, fair, and transparent elections on the scheduled date of December 22 next year.
