US Vice President: Deal with Iran 'Possible' if It Changes Its Behavior

Washington, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- U.S. Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday that reaching an agreement with Iran to end the conflict is “possible,” but it is contingent on Tehran’s behavior and its adherence to its commitments. In a press statement, Vance said the United States would determine its stance in the coming period based on what Iran does on the ground, rather than on statements by its officials, adding that “Iran must improve its behavior before any agreement is concluded.” He continued, “If the Iranians change their approach toward the United States, then yes, there will be an opportunity for much better relations. But we must see tangible changes in their behavior.” He noted that “U.S. policy toward Iran over the next two months will be based on field actions rather than statements,” pointing to Iran’s continued targeting and attacks on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. In this regard, he said that reports in Washington indicate that “Iranian officials opposed targeting the ships but failed to persuade the hardliners to back down,” noting a clear absence of decision-making in Tehran. This comes as the U.S. President, Donald Trump, announced last Saturday his rejection of an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire with Iran and the implementation of a series of conditions before reopening the Strait of Hormuz, deeming it “unacceptable.” This development occurs as mediators are again attempting this week to reach an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the conflict.
