Cairo, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy called on Tuesday for intensified efforts to contain the escalation in Yemen and create favorable conditions for resuming the political process, reaffirming the League’s support for a comprehensive settlement to be determined by the Yemenis, which preserves the country’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

The Arab League said in a statement that this came during Fahmy’s meeting with UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg, who is currently visiting Cairo to discuss the challenges facing de-escalation efforts and the revival of the political track in Yemen.

The statement added that the meeting addressed the regional repercussions of the Yemeni crisis amid intertwined tensions in the region, particularly developments in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab strait, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Horn of Africa.

Fahmy was quoted as emphasizing the importance of viewing the Yemeni crisis within its broader regional context, sparing Yemen from further repercussions of regional conflicts and tensions, and safeguarding the security and stability of Arab states as well as freedom of international navigation.

He stressed the Arab League’s support for reaching a comprehensive political settlement determined by the Yemenis themselves, based on agreed reference points and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

He clarified that the two sides discussed ways to enhance consultation and coordination between the Arab League and the United Nations regarding developments in Yemen.

They reaffirmed the importance of continuing communication and integrating political and diplomatic efforts to resume the political process and alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

They also stressed the necessity of advancing toward a sustainable political settlement that ensures security and stability and meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people. (End) M.M. / N.S.A.
