Cairo, September 29 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy affirmed today, Tuesday, the League’s support for efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Libya, driven by a purely Libyan will, and called for coherence between Arab and international initiatives in this regard. The League said in a statement that Fahmy’s talks during his meeting with Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, focused on developments in Libya, existing political tracks, and relevant regional and international initiatives. Fahmy reiterated the Arab League’s support for Libya’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of assisting Libyans in creating appropriate conditions for national consensus to advance the political process. He called for the convergence of Arab and international efforts and the coordination of regional and international initiatives to support attempts to bring closer the positions of Libyan parties, overcome the state of division, and create conditions for reaching Libyan solutions that enjoy broad consensus. The statement said that the UN Special Representative outlined during the meeting the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) at the political, economic, security, and communication levels, as well as its consultations with various Libyan parties, aimed at advancing the political process and creating suitable conditions for making progress on existing tracks. The two sides exchanged views on ways to enhance coordination between the Arab League and UNSMIL in the coming period, in a manner that contributes to supporting the political process, unifying state institutions, and realizing the Libyan people’s aspirations for security, stability, and development.
