Geneva, September 29 (KUNA) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Tuesday of outbreaks of cholera, measles, and dengue fever in Yemen, announcing that more than 7,780 suspected cholera cases have been recorded, resulting in 22 deaths, alongside more than 9,600 dengue fever cases that have led to 37 deaths, and over 22,000 measles cases.
Anette Heinzelmann, WHO Regional Director for Emergencies in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, speaking via video link from Cairo during a press conference in Geneva, stated that Yemen’s health system is facing mounting pressure due to years of conflict and the recent escalation of violence, which has pushed the already fragile health system to the brink of collapse.
The organization also warned that its warehouse stocks are nearing depletion, noting that it will be able to secure only $2 million of the $9 million required to fund the health response.
WHO called for urgent financing for itself, health partners, and non-governmental organizations operating on the ground to ensure the continuity of health services, expand injury care, enhance vaccination and epidemiological surveillance, and improve water and sanitation services in displacement sites.
She also emphasized the importance of expanding mobile medical services for displaced persons to ensure their access to healthcare, including maternal and newborn care services. (End) A.M.K. / N.S.A.
