Baghdad, September 28 (KUNA) – The Iraqi official news agency reported on Monday that Iraqi Airways will resume flights between Najaf Airport and Iranian airports three days after suspending services between the two countries in response to U.S. sanctions on Iranian aviation. The agency did not provide further details on the mechanism that enabled the resumption of Iraqi Airways flights, noting only that it was achieved through strenuous efforts by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. The ban on Iranian airlines appears to remain in effect, and flights will operate exclusively from Najaf Airport and not from any other airport. Najaf Airport had previously announced on September 25 the suspension of all incoming and outgoing flights to Iranian airports, in accordance with official directives issued by the competent authorities. Earlier, the Iraqi news agency had quoted a senior source as saying that the non-acceptance of Iranian aircraft at Iraqi airports resulted from ground handling and service companies declining to provide services to Iranian airlines for fear of facing sanctions.
