Kuwait City, September 27 (KUNA) -- Dr. Habiba Al-Muneim, the National Liaison Officer with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), announced on Sunday that the institute has obtained membership in the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA), a move that will enhance technical and scientific cooperation, facilitate the exchange of expertise, and strengthen national capacity-building in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
In a statement to KUNA, Dr. Al-Muneim, who also serves as a member of the Executive Council of the AAEA, said she met with the Agency’s Director General, Dr. Salem Hamdi, in Vienna, Austria, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Kuwait and the AAEA in areas such as expertise exchange, national capacity-building, and leveraging the technical and training programs provided by the Agency to Arab states.
She added that the meeting addressed opportunities to develop cooperation in fields of mutual scientific and technical interest, and reviewed Kuwait’s experience in managing its nuclear file, which has seen support and development in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy across the country.
She noted that this cooperation aligns with Kuwait’s presence in the framework of Arab and international nuclear work, and with Kuwait’s continued participation in the activities of the IAEA and its utilization of technical cooperation and capacity-building programs in the fields of nuclear science and technology and their peaceful applications.
Dr. Al-Muneim emphasized that Kuwait attaches special importance to developing cooperation with specialized institutions to facilitate the transfer of expertise and knowledge, develop national cadres, and enhance the utilization of nuclear technologies in health, environment, agriculture, water resources management, and nuclear safety and security.
She highlighted the importance of maintaining communication and coordination between Kuwaiti authorities and the AAEA, which opens the door for further technical cooperation and expertise exchange, and supports Kuwait’s efforts to develop an advanced national system in the fields of nuclear science and technology and their peaceful applications.
She reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening its presence at specialized international forums and leveraging Arab and international expertise to serve the goals of scientific research, development, and national capacity-building.
It is worth noting that the membership of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency previously belonged to the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy before the file was transferred to the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. (End) A.Y.S. / A.M.H.
