Foreign Minister: The world is witnessing increasing challenges whose impacts extend beyond conflict zones and undermine sustainable development pathways
New York, 25 Sep (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jeraf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah affirmed on Friday that the 50th annual ministerial meeting of the Group of 77 carries immense importance amid the increasing economic, climate, and security challenges facing the world, the impacts of which extend beyond conflict zones and undermine sustainable development pathways.
Speaking at the Group of 77 meeting held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Sheikh Jeraf Al-Sabah stated that this situation calls for concerted international efforts, especially as the deadline for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approaches without its desired goals having been achieved.
He emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to implement the "Seville Commitment," which aims to establish a more just and inclusive international financial system that takes into account the needs and priorities of developing countries, contributes to enhancing their access to development and climate finance, supports technology transfer, and bridges the digital divide. He underscored the need to consider the national circumstances and diverse development priorities of countries through a fair and equitable approach.
In the context of regional developments, Sheikh Jeraf Al-Sabah condemned the heinous attacks that the State of Kuwait has been subjected to since 28 February 2026, which targeted prominent figures and vital civilian infrastructure in a blatant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the principles of the UN Charter. He affirmed that the State of Kuwait has not been a party to any conflict and does not allow its territory, airspace, or territorial waters to be used to launch any hostile acts against any state.
He also called for the complete and unconditional cessation of these heinous attacks, stressing the necessity of respecting the sovereignty of regional states and full compliance with the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026.
He renewed Kuwait’s support for all diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region, affirming the need to reach sustainable regional understandings based on a firm commitment to the principles of good neighborliness, respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and the renunciation of the use of force or threat thereof. He also called for stopping support for proxies and militias, addressing all security concerns, including the Iranian nuclear file, ballistic missiles, and drones, and rejecting any steps that affect international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, while ensuring freedom and safety of navigation and the right of passage through international straits in accordance with the provisions of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
In conclusion, the Foreign Minister affirmed Kuwait’s commitment to unifying the voice of the Global South and defending the right of its peoples to development, security, and prosperity, and working towards a more just and equitable international system that entrenches multilateralism and is based on respect for the UN Charter and international law.
