China: Reached with Washington an agreement to establish relations that enhance strategic stability and positive cooperation
Beijing, Sept 25 (KUNA) -- China confirmed on Friday that it has reached an understanding with the United States to establish stable, strategic, and constructive relations based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity, in an effort to set the course for the future of ties between the world’s two largest economies. This came during a meeting held at the White House by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, accompanied by their wives, where the two leaders reviewed the outcomes of President Xi’s current visit regarding bilateral relations and contentious issues in the fields of trade and artificial intelligence, and exchanged views on international developments.
Xinhua News Agency quoted President Xi as saying during the meeting that his current visit has advanced the enrichment of the defining characteristics of China-US relations and achieved mutually beneficial results in the economic and trade sectors, noting that this would be welcomed by the peoples of both countries and the international community. He added that establishing stable, strategic, and constructive relations between the two countries requires both sides to pursue a direction that prioritizes cooperation, manages competition, keeps differences under control, and enhances prospects for peace, thereby paving the way for finding a correct path for coexistence between two major powers.
President Xi pointed out that Beijing and Washington are capable of achieving mutual gains through practical cooperation, enabling each other in healthy competition, and managing differences appropriately by finding common ground and building peace through increased mutual trust, which would benefit the peoples of the world. He said that the two countries reached a joint arrangement in the new round of their trade talks, which is welcome news for them and for the global economy, emphasizing the importance of “extending cooperation lists and shrinking problem lists” in accordance with the principles of equality and mutual benefit to achieve stability.
Regarding artificial intelligence, Xi noted that there is competition between China and the United States as leading countries in this field, but the prospects for cooperation are broader. He stressed the need to leverage each side’s advantages rather than erecting barriers and hedging against one another, and to continue dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI, working together to prevent misuse of the technology and keep it under human control.
For his part, President Trump said during the meeting that his Chinese counterpart’s visit was constructive and successful, and that the two countries had achieved many positive outcomes.
