Arab League Secretary-General calls on the UN General Assembly to defend international law

Cairo, 25 Sep (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy called on the United Nations General Assembly on Friday to fulfill its responsibility in defending international law, state sovereignty, and territorial integrity, amid escalating tensions in the region and the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

Fahmy made the remarks during a meeting with Khalil al-Rahman, President of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, in New York, according to a statement issued by the Arab League.

Fahmy emphasized the importance of building on the current international momentum supporting the two-state solution, noting that the continued humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the violations by the Israeli occupation in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem compel the General Assembly to uphold its duty to defend international law, state sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He congratulated the President of the General Assembly on assuming his duties, expressing his hope that the current session would place greater emphasis on the issues and crises affecting the Arab region.

According to the statement, the two sides exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues, and Fahmy listened to a presentation by the President of the General Assembly outlining the priorities of the current session and the key issues on the international agenda.
