Chinese President: Relations with the United States depend on strategic stability
Washington, Sept. 25 (KUNA) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that relations between his country and the United States are based on "strategic stability," describing China and the U.S. as "two great powers" capable of working together to achieve numerous accomplishments.
He made these remarks in a speech delivered during a dinner hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday evening in his honor at the White House on the occasion of his official visit to the capital, Washington, attended by senior officials from both countries as well as leaders from the business, technology, and cultural sectors.
Xi said, "We have made history through our joint engagement. Today, President Trump and I held candid and in-depth discussions and reached a shared understanding on a range of issues."
He emphasized that these understandings add a "new dimension" to the constructive China-U.S. relations, characterized by strategic stability, and establish a "new strategic direction" for China-U.S. relations.
During his address, the Chinese President extended congratulations to the U.S. government and people on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence, noting that the past years have witnessed friendly exchanges between China and the United States.
In this regard, he said, "More than 200 years ago, the United States turned its focus toward China, and the two countries began trading to meet each other's needs and rely on their complementary strengths," adding that China-U.S. relations now stand at a "new historic starting point."
For his part, President Trump stated in his speech that "our relationship with China is at its best, despite the fact that we represent different systems."
He added, "Americans and Chinese have long exchanged goods, knowledge, and ideas over the years, and this has been the cornerstone of mutual respect between us. We continue to build our relationship in a way that enhances security and prosperity for future generations."
During the event, Trump presented a commemorative statue of a bald eagle, the national bird and official symbol of the United States, as a gift to the Chinese President, saying that the statue "embodies the free and soaring spirit of our country, and we hope it will find a wonderful and beautiful place in Beijing."
Earlier, upon receiving the Chinese President at the White House on Thursday, Trump affirmed his country's commitment to establishing "balanced" trade relations with China, based on mutual respect and the shared interests of both nations.
He noted that the two-day visit will address several "very important" issues regarding security, technology, and artificial intelligence, underscoring the importance of the decisions emerging from this U.S.-China summit and their role in promoting peace and prosperity for decades to come.
The last official visit by the Chinese President to the United States took place in September 2015, when he visited Seattle, Washington, and New York and met then-President Barack Obama. (End)
