Pakistani Prime Minister underscores importance of activating Islamabad memorandum of understanding

Islamabad, Sept. 24 (KUNA) – Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed on Thursday the importance of activating and implementing the Islamabad Memorandum, while reiterating Pakistan’s readiness to continue playing a sincere and constructive role in supporting regional peace and stability.

Sharif made the remarks in a statement to the media on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, following his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Sharif added that President Pezeshkian assured him that the “Islamabad Memorandum” remains fully acceptable to Iran, noting that the Iranian president commended Pakistan’s efforts to achieve peace in the region and affirmed that the Islamabad Memorandum remains fully acceptable to the Iranian side.

Earlier, the office of the Pakistani Prime Minister stated that Sharif met with the Iranian President in the presence of senior officials from both sides on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, Sharif and Pezeshkian reaffirmed the close and historic relations between Pakistan and Iran and emphasized the need to enhance bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

They also exchanged views on regional developments, with the Pakistani Prime Minister expressing deep concern over the prolonged conflict and stressing the necessity of restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

He further underscored the importance of activating and implementing the Islamabad Memorandum and renewed Pakistan’s readiness to continue playing a sincere and constructive role in supporting regional peace and stability.
