Kuwait weightlifting team concludes World Championship participation in Athens with a gold and a bronze
Kuwait - 24 - 9 (KUNA) -- The Kuwaiti weightlifting team (Masters) concluded its participation on Thursday in the 2026 World Masters Weightlifting Championship, held in the Greek capital, Athens, by winning one gold and one bronze medal amid broad international participation.
Mohammed Al-Nasser secured the bronze medal after finishing third in the world in the 45-year age category for the 110-kilogram weight class, while Abbar Al-Fahad won the gold medal in the 40-year age category for the 86-kilogram weight class.
Talal Al-Jassar, President of the Kuwaiti Weightlifting Federation and Vice President of the Arab Weightlifting Federation, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) in an exclusive statement that the Kuwaiti participation met expectations, with the team’s athletes earning well-deserved medals while competing against an elite group of the world’s top players.
He added that the Federation placed its trust in its athletes, noting that the results were the fruit of long-term preparation and hard work leading up to the championship, and commended the efforts of the players as well as the technical and administrative staff.
Al-Jassar expressed his gratitude to Dr. Tariq Al-Jalahma, Minister of State for Youth and Sports Affairs, and Bashar Abdullah, the Acting Director General of the General Sports Authority, for their support of the national team delegation, emphasizing that the goal is to raise the flag of the State of Kuwait in international sporting arenas.
For his part, national team captain Mohammed Al-Nasser told KUNA in a similar statement that the competition was intense and highly competitive, given the participation of the world’s elite athletes. He explained that the support and encouragement of his teammates and coaches helped him secure a bronze medal that reflects the standing of Kuwaiti athletes in weightlifting.
He affirmed that the participation aims to elevate Kuwait’s name and strengthen its presence among the countries competing in the championship, which featured more than 1,510 male and female athletes representing 76 countries from around the world, making it one of the largest editions in the history of the sport in terms of the number of participants.
Al-Nasser extended his thanks to Dr. Tariq Al-Jalahma, Minister of State for Youth and Sports Affairs, Bashar Abdullah, the Acting Director General of the General Sports Authority, and Talal Al-Jassar, President of the Weightlifting Federation, for the support and facilitations they provided to the national team, confirming that this had a positive impact on the players’ performance and results.
The Greek capital, Athens, is hosting the 2026 World Masters Weightlifting Championship from September 17 to 26. This category is a competitive division reserved for athletes aged 35 and above, and it features official world, continental, and international championships.
