Deputy Emir and Prime Minister Delivers Kuwait's Address at the United Nations General Assembly

New York, Sept 24 (KUNA) -- His Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait, representing His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait, said that Kuwait, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have been subjected since February last year to an unjust Iranian aggression involving ballistic and cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, despite not being parties to the ongoing conflict in the region. This constitutes a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the UN Charter.
This was stated in the speech delivered by His Highness the Crown Prince, representing His Highness the Amir, before the 81st session of the UN General Assembly at the Organization’s headquarters in New York. The full text of the speech is as follows:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Your Excellency, President of the General Assembly,
Your Excellency, Secretary-General,
Your Majesties, Excellencies, and Highnesses,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
I am pleased at the outset to convey to you the greetings of His Highness the Amir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (may Allah protect him), and his best wishes for the success of the work of this session. We congratulate Your Excellency Dr. Khalilur Rahman and the friendly People’s Republic of Bangladesh on his election as President of the General Assembly, affirming our support for him and his wise choice of the theme for this session: ‘Restoring Trust and Managing Transformation: The United Nations for the Common Good.’
We also express our gratitude to Your Excellency Annalena Baerbock for the commendable efforts she exerted during her presidency of the previous session. We do not fail to commend the efforts, initiatives, and proposals of the Secretary-General in strengthening multilateral international action, such as the UN 80 initiative, the Pact for the Future, and the continuous efforts to confront global challenges and crises, including conflicts, wars, climate change, and terrorism, as well as assisting Member States in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing international action on artificial intelligence. We hope that efforts will continue after the end of the Secretary-General’s term at the end of this year, ensuring the continuity of work to reform and develop the Organization’s organs, activate its role, and elevate its performance in fulfilling its responsibilities.
In this context, we emphasize that reforming the Security Council—the organ entrusted with maintaining international peace and security—has become a necessity to keep pace with the significant increase in the number of Organization members and the changes that have occurred in international relations since its establishment. There is an urgent need for the Council to be more representative, effective, and transparent in fulfilling its responsibilities.
Mr. President,
Kuwait, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have been subjected since February last year to an unjust Iranian aggression involving ballistic and cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, despite not being parties to the ongoing conflict in the region. This constitutes a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the UN Charter.
These brazen attacks, carried out systematically and repeatedly, targeted civilian objects and vital facilities, including Kuwait International Airport, electricity and water stations, and oil facilities. This reveals an aggressive approach aimed at disrupting the foundations of life and vital infrastructure. These unjust attacks have claimed the lives of martyrs and innocent civilians, caused numerous injuries, and inflicted severe material and economic damage.
In an effort to further harm the economies of the region and the world and to affect global trade and oil markets, Iran is obstructing maritime navigation and closing the Strait of Hormuz, using it as a leverage card in the war, in violation of international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
In this regard, Kuwait expresses its deep appreciation to the sisterly and friendly countries that stood by its side and showed solidarity with it, as well as to the countries that sponsored Security Council Resolution 2817 and other international resolutions issued by the Human Rights Council and the International Maritime Organization, which condemned the Iranian aggression as a threat to international peace and security, called for its cessation, and affirmed the natural right of states to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, as well as the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation without any conditions.
