Libya and the United States Affirm Support for a National Pathway Paving the Way for Libyan Elections
Tunis, Sept. 24 (KUNA) -- Libyan Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed Al-Menfi and Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Africa and the Middle East, Massad Boulos, affirmed on Thursday their support for efforts to transform existing understandings into a national path leading to the unification of state institutions and the holding of comprehensive elections that will end the transitional phases in Libya.
The Libyan News Agency reported that this was stated during a meeting between Al-Menfi and Boulos at the Libyan Mission to the United Nations in New York, where they discussed developments in the political process and international and national efforts aimed at ending the state of division, unifying state institutions, and creating the conditions for presidential and legislative elections.
Both sides emphasized the importance of continuing consultation and coordination, and supporting efforts to convert existing understandings into an implementable national path leading to unified institutions and comprehensive elections that end the transitional phases and enable the Libyan people to exercise their right to choose their representatives through the ballot box.
Al-Menfi praised the efforts and initiatives supporting the unification of institutions and the path to elections, including U.S. efforts, and underscored the importance of building on the understandings achieved and developing them within a broader national path that expands the circle of participation to include various national forces and institutions, thereby ensuring the sustainability and implementability of any settlement.
He affirmed that he views positively any serious path that leads to ending the transitional phases and restoring legitimacy through the ballot box, stressing that the success of these efforts is linked to Libyan ownership of the political process and respect for laws, legislation, and the constitutional and institutional frameworks, which prevents the reproduction of division and strengthens the unity of the state and its institutions.
For his part, Boulos expressed his appreciation for the role played by the Chairman of the Presidential Council in supporting efforts toward consensus and stability, affirming the importance of his contribution in bringing different viewpoints closer together and working with various parties to succeed in the paths of unifying institutions and preparing a conducive environment for the electoral process within a framework that enjoys the widest possible national acceptance.
