Bahrain condemns attack on commercial vessel off the coast of Oman

Manama, 23 Sep (KUNA) -- The Kingdom of Bahrain expressed today its strong condemnation and denunciation of the attack targeting the commercial vessel Cape Daw off the coast of the sister Sultanate of Oman, which resulted in the death of one Indian seafarer and injuries to others, in a serious act that threatens the security and safety of maritime navigation and commercial shipping in the region.

In a statement, the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed the Kingdom’s sincere condolences and sympathy to the Government and people of India, as well as to the family of the deceased seafarer and his relatives, and extended its wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. The Ministry also expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the competent authorities in the sister Sultanate of Oman, particularly the actions taken by the Omani Navy to evacuate the ship’s crew and provide them with the necessary medical care.

The Ministry reaffirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s steadfast position calling for the security and guarantee of freedom and safety of maritime navigation and the movement of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and other vital waterways. It reiterated its rejection of targeting commercial ships and civilians, and its commitment to the rules of international law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and relevant United Nations Security Council and International Maritime Organization decisions, in order to safeguard energy security, stabilize supply chains, ensure the smooth flow of global trade, and contribute to consolidating security, stability, and peace in the region and the world.

Earlier today, the Omani Maritime Security Center announced the evacuation of the crew of a vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda after it was targeted approximately 2.5 nautical miles from Musandam Governorate, which overlooks the Strait of Hormuz.
