European Commission President and Syrian President Discuss Ways to Strengthen Partnership and Support Reconstruction

Brussels, 23 Sep (KUNA) -- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed on Wednesday ways to strengthen the partnership between the European Union and Syria and to support reconstruction and recovery efforts, during a meeting held in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Von der Leyen stated in a post on the X platform that the EU remains a reliable partner for a peaceful, stable, and inclusive transition in Syria, away from what she described as "harmful external interventions."

She added that the EU is actively working to support Syria's reconstruction and recovery and to ensure the safe and voluntary return of refugees, noting that the next steps aim to mobilize further investments and elevate the level of partnership between the two sides.
