GCC Secretary-General praises resumption of diplomatic relations between Rwanda and Belgium, commends Qatar's efforts

Riyadh - 23 - 9 (KUNA) -- The Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi, praised on Wednesday the resumption of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Rwanda and the Kingdom of Belgium, commending the diplomatic efforts exerted by the State of Qatar to create a conducive environment for communication between the two sides and to bring their positions closer, which contributed to reaching this positive step.

AlBudaiwi stated in a statement that Qatar’s hosting of the first direct meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Rwanda and Belgium in Doha, along with its constructive diplomatic initiatives, reflects the distinguished position enjoyed by Qatari diplomacy both regionally and internationally.

He added that this outcome reaffirms what diplomacy and sincere dialogue can achieve in terms of tangible results in overcoming differences and rebuilding trust between states, thereby contributing to supporting security, stability, and peace.

Earlier today, Qatar welcomed the joint decision by Belgium and Rwanda to resume diplomatic relations between them and reopen their respective embassies, a move it considered a positive step reflecting both countries’ commitment to overcoming differences through dialogue and mutual understanding.

In this context, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted in a statement that Doha hosted the first meeting between the two countries’ Foreign Ministers in June 2025, as part of Qatar’s efforts to bridge the gap between the two sides. This meeting opened the door for direct dialogue and paved the way for subsequent meetings and communications that led to the resumption of diplomatic relations.
