Doha, September 23 (KUNA) — Qatar welcomed today, Wednesday, the joint decision by Belgium and Rwanda to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies, a move it described as a positive step reflecting both countries’ commitment to overcoming differences through dialogue and mutual understanding.

In a statement on the matter, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Doha hosted in June 2025 the first meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries, as part of Qatar’s efforts to bridge the gap between the two sides. This meeting opened the door to direct dialogue and paved the way for subsequent meetings and communications that led to the resumption of diplomatic ties.

The ministry expressed Qatar’s appreciation for the recognition both countries showed for its role in this process, commending the constructive spirit demonstrated by both sides in addressing differences and dispelling misunderstandings. It also expressed Qatar’s hope that the resumption of diplomatic relations would open new avenues for cooperation between the two countries, thereby supporting peace and stability at both the regional and international levels.

The ministry reaffirmed Qatar’s firm belief that direct dialogue and diplomatic means represent the best way to resolve disputes between states, and emphasized Qatar’s continued support for all efforts aimed at bridging differences and settling conflicts through peaceful means.

Belgium and Rwanda had agreed to resume diplomatic relations in a move aimed at healing the rift that emerged after Rwanda severed ties with its former colonial power last year.

In a joint statement issued yesterday, the foreign ministries of both countries said, “The Kingdom of Belgium and the Republic of Rwanda have decided, on September 22, 2026, to restore diplomatic relations. To this end, the embassies of both countries will be reopened in the near future.”

Relations between the two countries had deteriorated after Belgium criticized Rwanda over allegations of supporting the M23 armed group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kigali severed ties with Brussels in March 2025 and expelled Belgian diplomats, accusing Belgium of undermining its position in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
