The Anticipated Trump-Xi Summit: US Optimism Amid Highly Complex Trade, Security, and Geopolitical Files

Trump and Xi discuss trade, artificial intelligence, and Iran

By Rola Al-Riyashi (Report) Washington, Sept. 23 (KUNA) -- As preparations continue for the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States today, Wednesday, to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in a new attempt to manage the escalating competition between the world’s two largest economies, U.S. leadership has expressed optimism about achieving tangible progress on a number of highly complex commercial, security, and geopolitical files, most notably artificial intelligence and Iran.

This U.S. optimism is strongly reflected in statements made by Trump last Friday at the White House, in which he affirmed the “good relationship” between him and his Chinese counterpart and expressed his belief that the meeting “will be very good” and will involve “the signing of many different deals.”

Furthermore, the intensive talks held last weekend in New York by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, which he described as “very successful and constructive,” with Chinese Vice Premier and chief trade negotiator He Lifeng, along with the continuation of the two sides’ meetings for 12 hours, serve as a clear indicator of the importance both countries attach to the upcoming summit between their leaders.

Trump and Xi’s discussions are expected to be highly multifaceted, especially since the U.S. president stated on the 13th of this month to journalists that he intends to discuss “almost everything” with his Chinese counterpart, including tariffs, the ban on Chinese cars, the governance and competitiveness of artificial intelligence, as well as supply chain issues, rare earth minerals, and sensitive international dossiers involving Iran, vital energy transit corridors, topics related to Taiwan, military competition in the Indo-Pacific region and the South China Sea, efforts to restore peace in the Gaza Strip, and ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Iranian file is likely to occupy a significant space at the summit, perhaps even larger than initially expected during the early stages of preparation, due to the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East and Washington’s launch on August 24 of an “economic pariah” campaign aimed at cutting off the financial and trade channels Iran relies on, while tightening sanctions on entities that help it circumvent sanctions or generate revenue.

This expectation is reinforced by the U.S. Treasury Secretary’s statement last Tuesday during a congressional hearing that Washington had conducted “good special discussions with China regarding the sanctions file on Iran,” as well as his confirmation that the issue of economic sanctions on Iran would be discussed during Xi’s meeting with Trump during his official visit to Washington.

Regarding artificial intelligence, the U.S. president’s statements on the matter indicate that the issue will be central to the summit, particularly since Trump has recently hardened his stance against calls from leaders of major U.S. companies in the sector to slow down the development of AI capabilities and impose controls on them.

On the trade and economic relations front, Trump and Xi’s talks are expected to focus on achieving a breakthrough regarding reciprocal tariffs, especially as the deadline for the expiration of the temporary U.S.-China trade truce approaches on November 10. The discussions are also expected to include follow-up on the agreement reached between Xi and Trump during their last meeting in Beijing in May, under which China committed, according to the U.S. president’s statement after the meeting, to increasing its purchases of U.S. agricultural products, alongside an initial deal to purchase 200 aircraft from Boeing.

Although Trump’s visit to China in May marked an important milestone in the trajectory of bilateral relations, it did not achieve a comprehensive breakthrough on contentious issues, making Xi’s visit to Washington a new test of both sides’ ability to translate May understandings into more sustainable arrangements.
