Global South Countries Hold Ministerial Meeting on the Margins of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly

New Delhi, Sept 23 (KUNA) -- Countries of the Global South held a ministerial meeting chaired by Indian Minister of External Affairs E. Jaishankar on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, currently underway in New York. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that participants discussed the challenges facing Global South countries amid the current global landscape, including ongoing conflicts affecting food and energy security, fluctuations in trade and investment flows, concerns for seafarers in conflict zones, climate phenomena, and delays in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It added that participants expressed shared concern over the declining effectiveness of multilateral institutions and stressed the urgent need for comprehensive reforms, particularly within the United Nations, to address contemporary global challenges that disproportionately affect Global South countries. The statement noted that participants exchanged views on global and regional developments and the importance of coordinating the positions of Global South countries in multilateral forums, and resolved to enhance cooperation among Global South countries by leveraging common strengths and harnessing artificial intelligence in a human-centric manner.
