UK Prime Minister and European Commission President Discuss Security Threats, War in Ukraine, and Illegal Migration

London, September 23 (KUNA) -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham held talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings on Tuesday evening, discussing a number of issues including the war in Ukraine, security threats facing Europe, illegal immigration, and the “safety” of artificial intelligence.

The British government said in a statement on Wednesday that the meeting discussed “the importance of working towards successful outcomes at the upcoming summit between the European Union and the United Kingdom,” scheduled to take place later this year.

The two sides addressed the challenges facing both parties in countering Russian threats against Ukraine, particularly those related to “hybrid warfare and disinformation.”

According to the statement, both sides emphasized the importance of working together to confront shared security threats facing Europe, curb illegal immigration, and address “unfair” competition and overcapacity in global markets.

The statement noted that the two sides also discussed “initiatives currently being implemented to address artificial intelligence safety issues,” as well as matters related to the United Kingdom’s presidency of the G20 in 2027, quoting Burnham as saying he “looks forward to hosting the G20 leaders’ summit in Manchester next year.” (End)
