British Foreign Secretary: Diplomacy, humanitarian access, and civilian protection are pillars of resolving the conflict in Sudan

London, September 22 (KUNA) -- British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said on Tuesday that diplomacy, ensuring humanitarian access, and protecting civilians are fundamental pillars for resolving the conflict in Sudan. During a speech at a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Miliband stressed that “there is no military solution that can end the conflict,” calling for a political solution led by civilian forces. He noted that “the expanded use of drones in the Sudanese conflict is being supported by external actors and states,” affirming the United Kingdom’s support for the UN sanctions regime and urging stricter oversight and consequences for parties supplying weapons to the warring sides and financing the conflict. Miliband also called for ensuring the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to assist more than 33 million people in need, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure from drone attacks that have claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people in the first five months of 2026. He further demanded unhindered access for humanitarian aid, including the permanent opening of the Adre border crossing and ensuring the opening of supply routes to the cities of El Obeid and El Fasher.
