Egyptian Prime Minister Calls for Reform of International Institutions and Ending the Israeli Occupation

Cairo, Sept 22 (KUNA) – Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli called on Tuesday for the continuation of international efforts to reform international institutions and enhance the effectiveness of multilateral action, emphasizing the importance of reaching a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue and ending the Israeli occupation. Madbouli’s stance came during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to a statement from the Egyptian Prime Minister’s Office. The statement noted that Madbouli stressed the importance of reforming global financial institutions to make them fairer and more equitable for developing countries, reaffirming Egypt’s support for Guterres’s UN reform initiative and the need to take into account the concerns of developing countries, ensuring that the review process is not exploited to reduce funding allocated to the development pillar of the international organization. On the Palestinian issue, the Egyptian Prime Minister reiterated his country’s firm position calling for a just, comprehensive, and sustainable settlement in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and relevant peace frameworks, thereby consolidating regional security and stability. He stressed the necessity of taking serious measures to build trust and adhere to the peace process, paving the way to address the root causes of the conflict, end the occupation, and establish an independent Palestinian state with sovereignty on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He pointed to Egyptian diplomatic efforts aimed at building a comprehensive Palestinian national consensus in coordination with mediators, reaffirming his country’s continued efforts to ensure the full, safe, and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian and relief aid to the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian Prime Minister praised the positions taken by the UN Secretary-General regarding the war in the Gaza Strip and his confrontation of Israeli violations of international resolutions, expressing Egypt’s appreciation for his commitment to continuous communication and coordination with Egypt on priority issues. For his part, Guterres expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s role within the UN system and its support for multilateral action, emphasizing the importance of its position in supporting security and stability in the region. The Secretary-General commended Egypt’s positions in dealing with regional crises and challenges, referring to developments in Lebanon, Sudan, and Yemen, as well as the Palestinian issue and peaceful settlement. According to the statement, the meeting saw an exchange of views on a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest, reaffirming the importance of activating multilateral mechanisms to address current crises, support de-escalation efforts, reduce tensions, and enhance regional and international security and stability.
