US President holds meetings with leaders of Britain, Japan, and Ukraine on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly
Washington, Sept 22 (KUNA) – U.S. President Donald Trump held meetings today with the leaders of Britain, Japan, and Ukraine on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During his meeting with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who assumed office last July, Trump expressed his belief that he “will be an excellent prime minister,” adding that “we can work and cooperate with him.” He said, “I believe relations are improving and are in better shape now compared to what they were with your (British) former prime minister,” referring to Keir Starmer, who resigned from office last June. The U.S. president noted that he discussed “everything” with Burnham, “from Rolls-Royce to energy and migration issues.”
In his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takayachi in New York, Trump said, “It is an honor to be with her; she is a friend of mine, and our acquaintance has grown significantly over the past period... History will immortalize her name as one of the greatest prime ministers.” For her part, Takayachi said that economic relations between the two countries are seeing “steady progress” in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and critical minerals, expressing her hope to “deepen relations between Japan and the United States.”
During his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump expressed confidence in reaching a resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, affirming that he has a “very good relationship” with Zelenskyy. He stressed, “We are trying to reach a solution (to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine), and I believe it will happen, and I am truly confident about that.”
For his part, Zelenskyy expressed his hope that the conflict with Russia would end as soon as possible, asking the U.S. president to help, saying, “I hope we can end this war and that President Trump will help us end it. I believe we need to do this as soon as possible, preferably before winter arrives.”
In the same context, when asked by a journalist about the message he wanted to convey to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump replied, “End the war,” referring to the military conflict with Ukraine.
The three meetings were preceded by Trump’s speech at the opening of the UN General Assembly, followed by the signing of a security agreement concerning Greenland. (End) R.S.R. / H.M.F.
