French President Warns Against Return of "Jungle Law" and Calls for Upholding International Law
New York, 22 Sep (KUNA) -- French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Tuesday of the return of what he described as the "law of the jungle" in international relations, amid the concentration of power and attempts to disregard international law and the sovereignty of peoples.
In his address during the high-level general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Macron stated that "today’s world is witnessing a concentration of power that leads some to believe they can ignore international law or the sovereignty of peoples, while others believe they are capable of making decisions regarding the future of the planet, including climate change and artificial intelligence."
He asked, "Do we want to live with the return of the law of the jungle, or in a civilized international community?" emphasizing the need for states to stand by the United Nations and work together to define the common interest.
Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to the United Nations, its Charter, and the multilateral system, while warning of the consequences of disregarding international law and undermining the Geneva Conventions.
The French President highlighted the humanitarian crises in Al-Fashir and the Gaza Strip, stressing that peace cannot be achieved without justice.
He affirmed France’s continued support for the International Court of Justice and its rejection of what he described as a "new system characterized by impunity that some are trying to establish."
Macron also reiterated France’s support for reforming the UN Security Council and opening the door to the admission of new members, particularly from the African continent, calling on the Council to act against grave violations of international law.
The French President condemned the continued international paralysis in the face of what he described as "brutality and heinous crimes," emphasizing the need to strengthen the capacity of multilateral institutions to address global crises.
