Sudanese government announces plan to change and replace the current national currency

Khartoum, 22 Sep (KUNA) -- The Sudanese government announced on Tuesday a comprehensive plan to change and replace the current national currency.

In a brief statement, the government said that Ibrahim Jaber, a member of the Sovereign Council, chaired a meeting of the High Committee for Currency Change and Replacement. The meeting was attended by several ministers, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, and other relevant authorities to discuss effective ways to implement the plan.

The statement noted that the meeting examined arrangements for the currency replacement in secure states, mechanisms to protect the national economy, as well as issues related to gold smuggling and economic regulation.

In a related development, Khaled Al-Aisir, the official spokesperson for the committee and Sudan’s Minister of Culture and Information, said in a brief statement that this meeting marks the culmination of a series of intensive meetings that have continued for more than a year and a half on this issue.

Al-Aisir revealed that the Sudanese government is working to develop robust plans to protect the national economy and address the on-the-ground, economic, and media challenges facing the country.
