US Secretary of State Emphasizes the Importance of Striking a Balance to Harness the Benefits of Artificial Intelligence While Mitigating Its Risks

Washington, Sept. 22 (KUNA) -- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on Tuesday the importance of striking a "difficult balance" in harnessing the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence while mitigating the associated risks.

Speaking in a television interview with NBC News, Rubio stated that "artificial intelligence is an inevitable technology, like any technological advancement in human history, but we must establish controls and frameworks to benefit from it."

He added, "I believe you are seeing global concerns about it, and this dialogue should have started two or three years ago," noting that China also shares the United States' concerns regarding artificial intelligence.

Rubio expressed the U.S. determination to maintain its global leadership in developing AI technology, "but we must do so in a way that does not harm our country," reaffirming that this represents a "difficult balance."

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had discussed with his Chinese counterpart, He Lifeng, during their meeting in New York on Monday the possibility of "opening a communication channel to handle any future incidents related to artificial intelligence."

Bessent said in a press statement that both sides are seeking to agree on the nature of the "major risks" posed by AI, whether they involve out-of-control AI systems, non-state actors in cyberspace, or non-state actors possessing biological weapons.

Some of the leading executives of major AI companies have raised concerns about the risks posed by their rapidly evolving models, but their calls to slow the industry's growth have been met with opposition from U.S. President Donald Trump, who strongly supports the expansion of AI companies and data centers in the United States.
