GCC Secretary-General: High-level general debates at the UN are a "crucial milestone" for building international consensus
New York, 22 Sep (KUNA) -- The Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi, described the opening of the high-level general debate of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday as a "significant international milestone" for bringing perspectives closer together, building consensus, and opening broader horizons for joint action on international issues and challenges.
The GCC Secretariat General stated that Al-Budaiwi made these remarks during his participation in the opening of the high-level general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, attended by several world leaders, heads of government, and senior officials.
Al-Budaiwi said that the gathering of world leaders and representatives in the general debate provides an important opportunity to enhance cooperation at a time when the international community is witnessing rapid transformations and challenges.
He emphasized that the current phase places a dual responsibility on the international community to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy and to create common ground for resolving disputes and settling crises through peaceful means, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and the provisions of international law.
He underscored the importance of multilateral diplomacy as a fundamental tool for addressing regional and international challenges.
Al-Budaiwi clarified that GCC member states approach regional and international issues based on a consistent approach grounded in respect for state sovereignty and independence, non-interference in internal affairs, and recourse to dialogue and political solutions.
The Secretary-General noted that the participation of GCC member states in the general debate, along with accompanying high-level meetings and consultations, provides a vital platform for exchanging views with international partners and expanding circles of understanding and coordination on shared issues, thereby supporting pathways toward peace, stability, development, and prosperity both regionally and internationally.
