Turkey: 11 students injured in shooting near school in Manisa province in western part of the country

Istanbul, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- Turkish authorities announced on Tuesday that 11 students, two of them in critical condition, were injured in an armed attack near a high school in the Turgutlu district of Manisa province in western Turkey, confirming that security forces have detained the suspect and opened an investigation into the incident.

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated in a press statement that the shooting took place outside the Inji Özmez Vocational and Technical High School in Anatolia, on a street students used to access the school, noting that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack.

Gürlek announced that the Turgutlu Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the attack and assigned two prosecutors to oversee the case, adding that authorities have also detained the suspect’s mother, father, and grandfather, after investigations revealed that the weapon used in the attack was in the grandfather’s possession.

The Turkish Ministry of National Education announced the suspension of classes at the same school on Tuesday and tasked inspectors from Manisa province and three ministry inspectors with investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The ministry added that psychosocial support teams have begun on-site work with affected students, teachers, and parents.
