Berlin, Sept 22 (KUNA) – The German government called on its Chinese counterpart today, Tuesday, to help de-escalate the conflict with Iran amid international concerns over the impact of Middle East tensions on international shipping and trade routes. According to a tweet by the German Foreign Ministry on X, Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul held a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi today, discussing the Iran conflict and other international issues. The ministry said that during the call, the German minister emphasized the necessity of maintaining freedom of navigation through key maritime passages, particularly the vital Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab. Wadephul added that Berlin and Beijing agree on the need to utilize all available means to contribute to de-escalation and ensure freedom of navigation in both straits. Germany’s move comes as Berlin seeks to maintain dialogue channels with Beijing while simultaneously working to engage influential international actors in efforts to de-escalate the Iran-related conflict and ensure the continued flow of navigation through critical maritime routes.
