Beirut, September 22 (KUNA) -- The head and Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Major General Diudato Abaniara, affirmed that “the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 remains the goal and foundation for achieving lasting peace and stability in southern Lebanon.” UNIFIL stated in a press release on Tuesday that Abaniara said in a speech delivered at an event hosted by the Force to mark the International Day of Peace that “peace is not something we address only once a year, but rather a continuous responsibility.” He reaffirmed UNIFIL’s patrols in the south and the maintenance of open channels of communication with the parties to support diplomatic efforts, mitigate the risks of misunderstanding and escalation, and to work alongside the Lebanese Armed Forces as they assume greater responsibilities in the south. He clarified that while peace in southern Lebanon remains elusive, hope for its achievement persists, noting that “lasting peace requires commitments and political solutions from the parties themselves.” He stressed that continued cooperation between the Lebanese Armed Forces and peacekeeping forces remains essential to maintaining stability and supporting the extension of state authority in the south. The UN Security Council unanimously decided in August 2025 to extend the mandate of UNIFIL for the last time until December 31, 2026, and to begin a phased and orderly drawdown and withdrawal starting from that date within one year. The UN General Assembly established the International Day of Peace in 1981 to call for a ceasefire and rejection of violence, and it serves as an occasion for all to work toward enhancing the values of tolerance, justice, and human rights.
