British Prime Minister Pledges to Work with the United States and Mauritius to Secure the Diego Garcia Military Base

London, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham affirmed today, Monday, that his country will work with the United States and the Republic of Mauritius to enhance security for ongoing operations and activities at the Diego Garcia military base, in order to safeguard British national security. The British government stated in a press release that Burnham’s position was conveyed during a phone call with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, to discuss ways to develop bilateral relations and exchange views on issues of mutual interest. According to the government statement, Burnham reaffirmed his country’s commitment to working with Mauritius and the United States to strengthen security for ongoing operations and activities at the military base, in protection of British national security. The statement noted that both sides agreed to explore opportunities to enhance relations between the two countries across various fields. It is recalled that the United Kingdom and Mauritius agreed in May last year to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, which hosts the base, to Mauritius, while retaining control over the joint UK-US base for 99 years. However, implementation of the agreement’s provisions was suspended after US President Donald Trump withdrew his support, as London seeks alternative pathways to move forward in cooperation with Washington and Mauritius.
