The Elysee Palace underscores the importance of the French President's visit to Saint Pierre and Miquelon

Paris, 21 Sep (KUNA) -- The Elysee Palace confirmed on Monday the importance of French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the French archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in the North Atlantic, describing it as a "historic visit."

In a statement, the Elysee Palace noted that the visit, which began on the 19th of the current month and concluded earlier today, "highlighted the unique position of the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago within its North American context."

It explained that "this archipelago, which is French territory in North America, represents a French regional, human, economic, and cultural pillar in the region."

The statement added that President Macron met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his visit to the archipelago, marking the first visit by a Canadian Prime Minister to the territory, a move that "reflects the depth of relations between the two countries."

It further stated that both sides discussed ways to strengthen economic, commercial, and human ties between the archipelago and Canada.

The visit comes after US President Donald Trump posted on social media a map showing the entire North American continent covered by the American flag. Experts viewed the visits by Carney and Macron to the archipelago as an expression of their support for national borders in the face of what they described as "Trump's regional ambitions."

The Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago is located approximately 20 kilometers off the Atlantic coast of Canada and has a population of around 6,000. The region experienced tensions with Washington during World War II, when France was under German occupation.
