Arab League condemns Israeli occupation's escalation against holy sites and the Palestinian people

Cairo, Sept 21 (KUNA) – The Arab League condemned on Monday the incursion into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israel’s security minister, members of the Israeli occupation government, and hundreds of Jewish settlers, under the protection of occupation forces. The League reaffirmed its rejection of any infringement on the sanctity of the site or any alteration of its historical and legal status.

In a statement, the Arab League stressed the necessity of respecting the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, reiterating its opposition to any measures aimed at changing the reality of these holy sites or infringing upon freedom of worship.

The statement deplored the continued incursions, raids, and arrest campaigns in Palestinian cities and towns, particularly in the town of Budus northwest of Jerusalem, including arrests, searches, home demolitions, and assaults on citizens. It characterized these practices as a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law and international humanitarian law.

The League affirmed its rejection of the closure of the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron to Muslim worshippers and the prohibition of the call to prayer (Adhan), calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities to halt these violations and provide protection for the Palestinian people and their holy sites.

It reiterated the importance of preserving the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem, which contributes to preventing escalation, achieving de-escalation and stability, and establishing just and comprehensive peace. (End) M.M. / N.S.A.
