Spain coordinates with Morocco to prevent a new crossing attempt to Ceuta on the 23rd

Madrid, September 21 (KUNA) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said on Monday that his country is coordinating with Morocco to take preventive measures to stop a new mass attempt to enter Ceuta on September 23, following the spread of calls on social media to cross the border.

Borrell, in an interview with Andalusia’s Canal Sur radio, stated that the messages circulating have not yet gained the momentum seen during the mass entry into Ceuta on July 30. He emphasized that he remains in continuous contact with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, to act if necessary.

He clarified that the Spanish Foreign Ministry is also running a campaign to counter “disinformation” through its embassies and consulates in Morocco, clarifying that irregular entry into Ceuta or Melilla does not grant the right to remain in Spain or move to mainland Europe.

Borrell noted that Spain and Morocco had previously taken preventive measures on August 15 when another call for entry into Ceuta spread, adding that the attempt did not result in a mass influx.

Ceuta witnessed the largest wave of mass entries this year on July 30. Borrell stated that approximately 80,000 people entered the city during that incident, confirming that most of those who crossed were returned to Morocco. (End) H.N.D./Sh.M.A.
