United States and China Discuss Mechanism to Address Artificial Intelligence Risks

New York, 21 Sep (KUNA) -- The United States and China discussed establishing a communication mechanism regarding artificial intelligence (AI) incidents that could have national security implications, in a move aimed at enhancing transparency and mitigating risks associated with this technology between the two countries.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the discussions took place during extensive economic talks held between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng at the headquarters of JPMorgan Chase in Manhattan, New York City, on Sunday evening. The two sides addressed issues related to AI, trade, and several other economic matters.

Citing Bessent in a press briefing following the talks, the AP reported that the United States proposed the creation of a new notification mechanism for AI incidents that may affect national security. He explained that the proposed mechanism aims to strengthen communication and transparency between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of moving toward greater transparency between the U.S. and China as the two leading powers in the field of AI.

Bessent noted that both sides agreed to continue their dialogue on AI and to hold further meetings to discuss issues related to this technology.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also participated in the talks, along with several senior officials from both sides, during which they addressed trade relations and a number of economic issues between Washington and Beijing.
