UNSMIL reaffirms commitment to implementing the small meeting agreement to organize elections in Libya

Tunis, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reaffirmed on Sunday its commitment to implementing the 4+4 Small Group Agreement, aiming to hold legislative and presidential elections in Libya within 24 months.

The mission stated in a statement that this was during a meeting of members of the Small Group Dialogue Committee in the Tunisian capital, aimed at following up on the implementation of the agreement signed in Tripoli on August 30.

It clarified that the members renewed their commitment, during the meeting chaired by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative Hanaa Titi, to move forward with implementing the provisions of the agreement, leading to the organization of national elections that meet the aspirations of Libyans for stability and prosperity under unified and legitimate institutions.

The members reviewed the various declared positions regarding the agreement, particularly the supportive stance of the UN Security Council and the Libyan House of Representatives, and agreed to continue their communication with other local parties to garner the maximum possible support for it.

The mission added that this meeting is the ninth in a series of Small Group meetings and the first since the signing of the agreement between the two parties on the reconstitution of the National High Electoral Commission and the amendment of electoral laws. It noted that today’s meeting will be followed by a new follow-up meeting during the first week of October next.
